Alvin Perelman, MD, MBA
- Medical Director/Owner SWPE
- Pediatric Endocrinology Medical Director of Cardon Children's Hospital
- Board Certified Pediatric Endocrinologist
Dr. Alvin Perelman grew up in Montreal, Canada and HATES winter. He went to medical school in Calgary, Alberta, graduating in 1976. There, he met his mentor who spurred his interest in pediatric endocrinology. By his third year in medical school, he was already taking calls for patients of his mentor when he was out-of-town. This led to 2 fellowships in this specialty. The first was at LA Children’s Hospital, a USC facility. The second was at Harbor General Hospital, a UCLA facility. He can root for either LA school in the PAC-12. Because of visa status, he went back to Canada and opened a private practice in Ottawa for 4 years. Again, that winter took its toll. Back to the southwest! He joined the faculty at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and worked there for 17 years. He was head of the endocrine section for 15 years. In 2000, he began his own private practice at SW Pediatric Endocrinology to be able to offer a more personalized service to patients and families. To this day, he’ll call patients on nights or weekends when he gets back lab work. He is medical director for pediatric endocrinology at Cardon Children’s Hospital. Dr. Perelman is married to Cristina Carballo, MD, a neonatologist who is the medical director of the Neuro NICU at PCH. Their daughter is an accomplished horseback rider. She is a freshman at University of Washington in Seattle studying pre-med. Dr. Perelman’s main clinical interests are growth disorders and congenital hypothyroidism. The latter was a major part of his research fellowship. When not working, he is a closet geek who likes to dabble in technology. Every January, you can catch him browsing the floors of the Las Vegas convention center at the annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show).
Joel Hahnke, MD, FAAP
- Board Certfied Pediatric Endocrinologist
Dr. Joel Hahnke grew up in the Midwest (Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin) and attended Bradley University for his undergraduate degree. He attended medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin. After graduation in 2001, he came to Arizona for his residency training in pediatrics and then completed his fellowship in pediatric endocrinology, both at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. His research experience during fellowship involved the epidemiological study of diabetes progression in a high-risk ethnic population, as well as the prevalence of anti-islet cell antibodies in a Type 2 Diabetes population. He became an associate of SWPE in summer of 2007. Dr. Hahnke loves to spend time with his wife and children. Both he and his wife are strongly involved with their church. Their hobbies include golf, disc golf, and occasional hiking and camping trips whenever they can get away. Patients will also find out very quickly that Dr. Hahnke is an avid Star Wars fan. His wife’s family is in Tucson, where she grew up, and the couple tries to see their family in Arizona, Florida, and the Midwest as much as possible.
Cecilia grew up in Douglas, Arizona and moved to Phoenix in 1977 where she worked at Frist Interstate Bank for 22 years. She had a change in careers when she was employed by Dr Perelman at Southwest Pediatric Endocrinology in April of 2002. She loves working with families that come to our office and provides the best customer service possible. Her hobbies are horseback riding, hiking and all sports indoors or outdoors. Her family is in Arizona, California and Las Vegas and visits them as much as possible.
